iCall Brings Seamless VoIP To IPhone Users

andrewmin writes "iCall, a company well known for offering free VoIP calling for Windows users, has just announced the first iPhone app that offers free phone calls over WiFi. It's also one of the first legal (in other words, non-jailbroken) VoIP apps. I don't have an iPhone, but if I did, you can be assured that I'd be on this in a second." iCall brings seamless GSM / VoIP hand-offs to iPhone - switch between GSM and WiFi networks with ease

There's just something about saving those relatively expensive wireless minutes by using VoIP calling technology to reach out and touch someone. VoIP solutions have already allowed iPhone users to get jiggy with internet-based telephone calls, but the latest iPhone VoIP application to hit the iPhone brings with it the ability to hand-off calls between WiFi (VoIP) and GSM networks. With iCall there's no need to manually switch over from WiFi-based VoIP calls to start using the GSM network, or v

T-Mobile Suing Starbucks

T-Mobile is already not thrilled AT&T will replace them as the service provider of choice in Starbucks stores, now the GSM-based service provider who was early to embrace WiFi is losing revenue due to the new AT&T/Starbucks promotion of free WiFi in its stores. While the news came out around February 11th that AT&T and Starbucks would provide free WiFi service, according to these court documents T-Mobile learned of this arrangement on or around March 30th. Here are the salient

How Business Can Learn From Obama

I came across an article which shows how a small company can use the methods Obama utilized in the election to help them compete with big players in the market. Some of the examples include how a small hardware store can compete on service not price. Sadly the local hardware store near TMC was wiped away by Home Depot and they did provide superior service. Nevertheless, the ideas in the piece do make sense and it is worth a read. TrackBack (0) | Comments (1) | Tag with del.icio.us | VoIP Blo

Amazon Fights for First Amendment

The scary part about so much information about people being in a single place is that the government knows where to look. This is a good thing when they are investigating a suspect but when they start to investigate the reading habits of people who are not under any suspicion, it becomes troublesome. In short, Amazon was asked by the government to hand over which products were purchased by a large group of people in the hopes that one or more of these customers would testify against the selle

Over Logging

Over Logging We had a big storm roll through on Wednesday afternoon. About 6 hours later I lost my cable modem connection. Since the storm was long over, I'm guessing the power backup at the cable modem head end ran out. I was pretty fortunate compared to some people at work didn't have any power at home. The power was still out Friday so I borrowed a EVDO card just in case. That turned out to be unnecessary as my cable modem came backup at 4pm. Find more videos like this on www.truveo.c

iPhone AppStore to open Monday?

Third-party developers have been frantically working with the recently released iPhone SDK to put together applications for Apple's approval and subsequent release through the approve AppStore, but there's no word yet on which applications may have made the cut. The Mobivox opportunity

Jim's right that Mobivox has problems. There are two parts to Mobivox's value as I see it. First, Mobivox offered a speed dial to Voxgirl, a software agent. I had a connection with a good speed as normal so figured that there could not be any problem with the actual wiring. (I had done a quick check to be sur

The Metered Internet: Where Has all the Bandwidth Gone?

. . . Long time passing. A basic premise of the metered Internet plans Time Warner and other ISPs are cooking up is that there is simply too much bandwidth being used up by too few people. You know, the YouTube users and the downloaders. In order to be able to maintain - and presumably enhance - the network to accommodate such over usage, someone needs to pay for all that loss of bandwidth. As much as I vehemently disagree with the plan on a number of levels, I did at first take this root conc

Whereas it once was a cheap way for college kids to call friends across the country with bad reception, it’s now as clear as a traditional phone call â€" just a lot cheaper. According to TMC: The NASCAR racing team reportedly purchased a

HTC Touch Pro

The HTC Touch Pro may be the ultimate Blackberry killer. I know the term "killer" is used very often but let's look at this situation carefully... People who type a lot benefit from a keyboard. Sure, an on-screen keyboard works but it is not ideal. I beleive one of the reasons the Blackberry does well is because it has a great keyboard and the OS is very stable. Getting back to HTC, the Touch Pro gives you HSPA, WiFi, 640x480 resolution, Windows Mobile 6.1, a 3.2 megapixel camera and more. In

YouMail Visual Voicemail App on Your Smartphone

I began using YouMail on a regular basis when the company offered visual voicemail, which utilizes speech-to-text technology and delivers my voicemail in an SMS on my mobile or email. It’s quite handy for those times you can’t get to the phone or are on the other line, and even though the speech-to-text technology still leaves a bit to be desired, it works well enough for me to remain hopeful for future releases. And as useful as this particular feature is, there was still no visual voicemai

Poll results: Do hiring managers consider your resume’s Objectives statement?

Last week, I opened up a discussion by asking if you use the Objectives statement on your resume. Apparently, this was a topic a lot of you feel strongly about because 172 posted your reasons for or against the resume element. Many said they use it to let the potential employer know what they are interested in, while some use it as shorthand for a cover letter in case the cover letter gets misplaced in the chain of interview steps. TechRepublic member karen said, “I put my career goals in my o

Time Warner Cable Testing 40GB Download Cap

Time Warner Cable will beginning testing a broadband service cap of 40GB/month in Beaumont, Texas. The first thing I want to say is that this would end up costing me roughly $40 more per month then what I am paying now. I would not consider myself to be a heavy user, I probably download roughly 3GB per day though, which, in my opinion, would be considered some one who uses it more than the average joe but not nearly as heavy as the user who has bittorrent running 24/7. I pay $45 per month and

Looking For A VoIP Application For Your S60?

VoIP must be the feature each and everyone of us is looking forward to use more extensively in the future. With the advent of Skype, and recently Skype for Mobile, I have been looking more and more into the different offerings, and trying them. It is of high personal interest for me, as I know next year I will be traveling and looking for a cheap and convenient way to keep in touch. When I began my search, I was startled by how many applications are out there, until I found 3 very nice post

Emerging/Missional Computing Taboos: My Kit

I’ve noticed that a lot of emerging church types like to talk about their Macs. Ever notice none of them talk about their PCs unless it’s in an apologetic tone with the notation that they’re misfits or just too old or something… otherwise they would be using a Mac. So I figured I’d break taboo. I am no fan of Windows, and I do not own a Mac. Oh, yes. Purist language coming… those who argue against Microsoft product on moral grounds should really go the whole way and instead of defaulting to M

Verizon In Talks To Buy Alltel - $27 billion dollar deal looms… Site Feeds, VoIP, broadbandreports.com No Comments » CNBC reports that Verizon is in deep negotiations to acquire Alltel for around $27 billion, which I’m fairly sure Verizon has in their petty cash drawer. Why Tiered Broadband Is the Enemy of Innovation

It should come as no surprise: Incumbents are beginning to act like incumbents. But while the cable companies are the first ones to jump on the tiered broadband bandwagon, they won’t be the last. Their argument for limiting bandwidth and data transfers based on price sounds like a good idea, especially as a way to get bargain hunters to buy. In the long run, however, tiered broadband is a terrible idea that will bring the innovation inspired by flat-rate broadband to a screeching halt. Flat-r

Wednesday Links: Vonage, Fax over IP

Wednesday Links: Vonage, Fax over IP June 4th, 2008 by S. Caron What could a company want with a memory stick that turns any PC into a VoIP phone? What could they want with it so much that they would spend $6.5 billion to get it? Interesting stuff. Read about it here. Faxing over IP stinks, says the VoIP Weblog. Does it really? Vonage Talk

I have begun using Vonage Talk at home after reading about it in detail. I have always found it necessary to have a “home phone” and this represents one more reason to keep my Vonage line active. It rings when your phone rings and allows you the ability to make and receive calls via the software. This is

Canada's fight for Net Neutrality

Shortly after I founded the Net Neutrality advocacy site Neutrality.ca in January 2007, TheTyee, published an article saying that Canada was sleeping through the war to 'save the internet'. Craigslist bans VoIP, Prepaid

Image by Getty Images via Daylife Craigslist has pulled an interesting maneuver.  In an attempt to control spam on the site, a few months ago they implemented a telephone verification process for certain categories of ads.  Place an ad in one of the categories in question, and a few moments later you would receive an automated phone call asking you to verify that you had in fact placed the ad.  All well and good, except for the fact that the televerification system won’t dial a VoIP or a pre

Headed to Telx CBX 2008

Later this week I will be a video reporter at the Telx CBX (customer business exchange) event in New York. I always like the CBX events and am looking forward to meeting with the companies in the carrier hotel space (many lease space in the Telx interconnection facilities throughout the US) who come to network and exchange ideas and do business with one another. I reached out to Telx to get a quick quote on why you should be at the show and Tesh Durvasula, Chief Marketing Officer of Telx had

Why Microsoft Needs to Worry About Firefox

Mozilla's Firefox is on schedule to break 20% share next month and this is very bad news for Microsoft. If we are to play out what the next 5-10 years will look like in the world of technology, one of the knowns is that SaaS will become a bigger market and as such less companies will care about the OS and the applications on local machines. Knowing what we know now, we can expect most new computers to have Intel and AMD chips but from there, the OS is becoming less important. Soon enough we c

Mr Operator: It’s a question of frustration

Mr Operator is back with an update on his first post published yesterday. - - - - - I make no apology for couching my opening piece in a tone likely to elicit either mirth or derision, depending on your point of view. Call it the result of an upbringing on Ben Elton and Richard Curtis. Ewan is indeed correct when he paints the picture as one of frustration, not sadism. I take absolutely no pleasure in informing intelligent, diligent people that they have laboured in vain for a year on some

Is Twitter a security risk?

I use Twitter, it’s a fun tool to keep half an eye out on some of my friends and other interesting people are doing right now. I think it’s a pretty decent communication tool. But like many tools it’s easy to over communicate. Some of the people I follow have started using Twitter mashup Brightkite and are using it to send pictures with location information to Twitter. I trust that folks like Mediaphyter are savvy enough to carefully regulate their information, but I have to wonder if the avera

Crewmember confidential: 13 secrets for stretching your travel dollar

If you haven’t been on an international trip for a while, brace yourself for sticker shock. As many of us know, the dollar is at an all-time low against most currencies and there is not much relief in sight. Should you call off that overseas vacation? No, hang on. If you are open to a little ingenuity or thriftiness, you could lessen the pain on your bank account. I guess I am getting old when I can remember such classic guidebooks as Europe on $5 a Day. Some inflation over time is inevitable

Movistar brings iPhone to Spain

And we've wondered what happened to Spain. The country was left out in all iPhone announcements during last couple of weeks. It was kinda obvious Apple will re-use its existing "partner in crime" from the UK, where Telefonica-owned O2 is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. Now, their Spanish subsidiary, Movistar, got the same contract with Cuppertino folks. Or at least, no other carrier in the country manage to scoop the deal with Apple. Again, no exact release date was given, nor pricing i

Might Mid-Band Ethernet Make Copper Competitive With Fiber?

In a recent post, I posited that it was possible to take the entire bandwidth of a copper line and instead of making it voice, make it data and run VoIP over the top of it. That was just a theory. The folks at Hatteras Networks actually have a way to accomplish that-at better speeds than I was proposing. Their Mid-Band Ethernet solution can use up to 8 copper pairs and aggregate that into about a T3-45mb/s symmetrical. Even with a single copper pair, they can get a very reasonable 5.7 mb/s-al

Secret messages could be hidden in net phone calls

The next time your internet (VoIP) phone call sounds a bit fuzzy, it might not be your ISP that's to blame. Someone could be trying to squeeze a secret message between the packets of data carrying the caller's voice. New Scientist reports. "Two information scientists at the National Institute of Telecommunications in Warsaw, Poland, revealed last week that they are developing a "steganographic" system for VoIP networks. Steganography is the art and science of writing hidden messages in such

Extending mobile presence - the need for context and device state information

I speak to a broad variety of vendors and operators about presence in a mobile context. It crops up repeatedly both for operator-centric developments like IMS and RCS, and also for independent applications like mobile VoIP and corporate unified comms. In theory, mobile phones ought to be good platforms for presence information - both rudimentary connection details (online, offline, idle etc) and some personalised state or emotional content as well ("Dean is currently thinking about lunch" and s

Of IP Communications and Broadband Reliability

I came across an interesting article in the New York Times by Randall Stross which discusses consumer VoIP services, the differences in quality between them and the general trend towards multiple services of lower reliability replacing a single service (PSTN) of extreme reliability. What is interesting is comments by Comcast regarding the reliability of the company's service as compared to Vonage. The cable company stresses that their quality is better. They go on to say, because they have co

The Telco’s are getting somewhere around here.

Skype on Heathrow Express Wi-Fi sounds pretty good

Today I had a conversation with Andy Abramson via Skype. He was traveling on the Heathrow Express (the train that ferries people between Heathrow Airport and London’s Paddington Station), but what made the call very special was that he was using the train’s Wi-Fi service, accessing the network via his new Asus eee PC900, a mini mobile laptop. I was on my Mac Book Pro at home on Skype. None of us used a headset. The quality of the connection was outstanding. There was no echo, the connection was

Network Problems

I have written earlier about how I was without internet connection for a week due to the fact that I had an internet provider whose people are lacking in technical know-how and some deep thinking skills. I had to resort to eventually doing a clean installation of Vista in my computer just to prove to them that it was not an operating system issue nor a CAT5e cable issue but it was a network issue that them, and only them, could solve. Given the choice? I would have already switched to a better

Torrent Woes

Torrent Woes The worst thing about pirating tons of free movies, TV shows, and musicÂ….er I mean downloading open source content like Linux distributions, is the fact that torrents have a tendency to hose your friggin connection when it comes to doing much else with it that is the slightest bit latency sensitive. Fax Over IP == Fail!

© anomalous4I remember when I went through buying and selling real estate last year. Lots and lots of faxing. I tried desperately to use Voice over IP solutions to send faxes. For the most part, they failed. I simply ended up using my landline to send and receive faxes. When I saw why Dan York kept his landline when he moved recently, I found myself nodding when he listed faxing. He also lists three other important reasons as well: DSL requires it, 911, and the reliability of various number
