WiFi Franchise in Sri Lanka

I was introduced to another communication center microfranchise called EasySeva in Sri Lanka similar to the n-Logue or ONE Roof models I have covered previously.  I was informed they have 23 outlets and expect to have 55 outlets by the end of the summer.  It is a private, for-profit Sri Lankan company with a holding company in the U.S. but the seed funding was awarded in a contract with USAID.  The model of EasySeva relies on corporate partnerships to actually provide the services, including Di

Cable Telephony Grows @ HOME, BUT WHAT ABOUT @WORK?

The cable industry is showing that it can really play the "takeaway" game when it comes to telephony in the home based on what I'm reading over at IP Democracy this morning. What does this mean? Here are some thoughts about the landscape that runs over cable and why the cable guys are winning. 1) AT&T still has the best quality platform in VoIP with CallVantage, but they're no longer really pushing it. Instead they want to see consumers either stay legacy PSTN or switch to UVerse where Vo

Put Down That Danish -- You are Destroying the Plant

When I read about obesity causing global warming I wasn't surprised. After all, look at how hard airlines try to shed a few dozen pounds from an airplane just to save weight -- which in turn will save fuel. All that effort can be counteracted by a single passenger who is overweight. Let alone a plane where 30% of the passengers are obese. Now it seems that it is not just the obese people that fly causing a problem. Apparently these people also consume 18% more food than their "non-obese" coun

How Much Would You Pay For Free?

How much would you pay to use Twitter? How about Facebook? Gmail? Would answering a simple "How much would you pay for it?" question help us to understand how the valuable is perceived differently from the disposable? I was going through a credit card bill and among the usual sad thoughts the activity conjures there was one relevant to this blog. There are a lot of online services out there, and I'm actively using a fraction of them. I pay for some, but many are free. The question is, why am I

Vonage Put Under The Ikeroscope

I happen to always enjoy reading Ike Elliott's analysis of companies in the VoIP space that are publicly traded. God does his microscopic analysis remind me of what we used to see from James Enck before he ran off from being simply watched by the Japanese for every move he made with the EuroTelcoBlog to greener pastures with a hedge fund where he's been bound and gaged to the outside world. Well no matter. For James' silence has led to a gap that Ike does his best to fill. His analysis of Vona

Packet8 SIP Trunking Rumor

I have heard a rumor regarding 8x8/Packet8 getting into the SIP trunking business. No confirmation yet but this makes great sense as this area of the market is doing well. In other words, VoIP is the routing of vocal conversations over the internet, or any other network that is IP based.

The self-described “leader in voicemail-to-text services and visual voicemail applications” has established a bridge to GrandCentral that will allow users to automatically receive text versions of messages originally left to GC from one or more

Vodafone to Buy Tiscali?

What is gonna happen if the giant mobile operator Vodafone acquires Tiscali, one of the biggest service providers in Europe? Vodafone is already working hard to push to the market an advanced FMC offering for the consumer and business market, hence this would surely be a strategic acquisition for them.  Moreover, Vodafone bought Tele2 Italy and Spain some time ago, too. The main advantages Vodafone would get from this further acquisition are, to me, the following: 1) Immediate access to the

Voice 2.0--Just Like Voice 1.0 With APIs

I remember reading Doug Mohney back in the days of Boardwarch, but have not been keeping up with him since then. But the VoIP Princess Carolyn Schuk brought to light some very relevant opinions from Doug related to Voice 2.0: [Jeff] Pulver wanted purple minutes, minutes of IP traffic part of an enhanced application that might include voice, data and video content. Six years later, Jeff is still looking for his honest purple minutes and innovative applications. Voice 2.0 is here, but there's be

How good is good enough?

Has anyone else noticed that phone calls just don't seem to be as good as they were 10-15 years ago? I had a number of radio interviews in the wake of the recent tragic breakdown in communications that may have contributed to the death of a Calgary toddler. Many of the discussions surrounded the potential for compromise in 9-1-1 location information associated with nomadic VoIP. With over-the-top VoIP, the phone line just cannot be as reliable as a traditional circuit switched phone service. I

My Canada Trip and Nortel Wrap Up

I am back from Canada and the first thing I did when turning on my phone was praise the engineers who came up with the awkward-sounding acronym called EVDO. By the way in my discussions in Canada it seems the people who told me Rogers will be offering EVDO are wrong as Rogers uses GSM/GPRS and their evolution is to LTE - which coincidentally stands for long term evolution. Bell Mobility is going to be upgrading to EVDO according to my sources and moreover the high price for wireless access is

No Femto Cells needed in my home. WiFi UMA works just fine.

Since 1997, when I choose GSM operator Omnipoint as my wireless provider, I have never been able to use my cell phone at or near my home. And over the years, as Omnipoint was acquired by VoiceStream and then after T-Mobile acquired VoiceStream, I have gotten used to the fact that my cell phone would just not work at home. All of this changed last night after I purchased a new Blackberry Curve. Moments after turning on my new phone and syncing with my home WiFi hotspot, I was able to make and re

VON, the day after

For those who, like me, are already missing VON conferences, I recommend to read this blog post by pal Jon Arnold. It’s a thoughtful post on why VON has been shut down and what there can be next. Who knows, maybe eComm is really the event that will take the place left by VON in terms of innovation in the communication space. No doubt, eComm is in pole position right now and, unlike my initial doubts, I can definitely say that Lee Dryburgh did a great job this year.   If you liked this articl

Managing Remote Relationships

The management landscape is changing drastically as more salespeople move to remote/home offices within their territory.  Yet, many aspects of sales seems to be moving more towards relationship-based sales.  Yes, relationships have always been a key part of selling, but it seems to be the greater piece today.  Information flows freely on the Internet so the differentiation between companies is being pushed onto their salespeople.  So we have arrived at the place where relationship-driven salesp

Tips in Making Cheap International Phone Calls

If you have friends or relatives abroad, one of the most popular ways in which the gap can be filled is through international phone calls. However, the concern often faced by people is that international phone calls tend to be costly. Often times, call rates start per minute and usually it is the currency of the country where you will be calling. Some people may think it’s not much but when you are already speaking to someone on the other end, there’s always a tendency for you to forget just ho

Linkua (which is a combination of “link” and “lingua,” Latin for language) believes there are ten advantages to studying a language on the phone, including less dependence on non verbal communication, more flexibility with scheduling, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Corporations Fail To Budget For Upcoming Bandwidth Boom

Nicholas Carr, author of The Big Switch and of IT Doesn't Matter states the information technology (IT) departments won't matter in the next few years as computing takes place on the Net, versus on the PC. Will corporations be prepared for the upcoming bandwidth boom? Enterprise bandwidth requirements will more than double in the next five years, yet budgets will only increase by five per cent, according to a survey released today. The research, carried out by Omniboss - a division of marke

Do You Use The 3G Features On Your Mobile?

Last week, the Australian Communications and Media Authority released a report that stated that in Australia, one third of mobile users have a 3G phone, but two thirds of those users didn't use the available 3G service like internet browsing, video calls and music streaming. Apparently, some people just aren't interested in using their mobile for anything other than making calls. Others believed that the price was too high, and others just had no idea how to actually use the services. The re

THREE QUICK TECH POSTS

GigaOm is reporting that the telcos are conspiring on a Skype competitor.  As a highly satisfied Skype user I have little faith that the same companies that are hanging by a monopolistic thread because their business models range from lame to outright fucking stupid, because their innovation efforts are as anemic as a toothless vampire, and because they have this nasty habit of violating U.S. citizens’ right to resist unreasonable search and seizure, would be able to actually make this work. I

Herding cats

Axia SuperNet filed an application on April 21 for the CRTC to review its Deferral Account Decision (2008-1) on the basis that TELUS will be using some of the money in communities that already have broadband internet. Contrast this with an application by TELUS on April 23 asking the CRTC to review the same Decision, but on the basis that more of the Deferral Account funds should go to more communities. Why do I raise these 3 week old applications now? Axia has filed some supplemental materials

Making VoIP Work For You

A common misnomer about Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is that it requires you to be using a headset, tethered to your computer.  This is simply untrue as modern VoIP services and solutions use either a) normal corded and cordless phones or b) a specialized phone that resembles a cordless phone or cell phone - just modified to utilized VoIP technology. VoIP has some major advantages over traditional landline phones. First, typically you can call phones in the US and Canada for one monthl

I do understand your concerns about adding people to your network and to be honest, I check twice myself before adding people that I do not know. I really appreciate your decision. Wanna start your own Internet Cafe in 2008?

After many, many requests the next date for the 2008 Internet Cafe workshop has been set. Please note I only do ONE workshop every 6 months like this. The next one will be in Cape Town in November. He will teach all the basics of moving from employment to self-employed and running a business that employs people. While I will

Chasing Early Adopters

Chasing Early Adopters If you were asked to list the top “early adopter” US cities you might start with San Jose or Santa Clara. Nope. Austin tops the list, then Las Vegas and Sacramento followed by San Diego, Washington DC, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, New York and San Francisco. The Scarborough report is a free report that aims to hone in on the “digital savvy” of the US population and narrowed it down to a small 6% of Americans who have DVRs, MP3 players, HDTV, VOD, VOIP, mobile phone use

Free City-Wide Wi-Fi Not Dead Yet (Not Exactly Living Though Either)

Even though the NSW state government decided it hated the idea of free Wi-Fi, Unwired is joining up with cafe owners in Sydney and Melbourne to provide free hotspots for consumers. The idea is obviously nothing new - Starbucks has been doing it for years - but it is a step forward for tech-lovers in the country's two biggest cities. While Unwired are seeking cafes and bars to take up their uConnect service, the service is also being picked up by local councils and libraries. Since December la

What's Next In IP Communications? Here's An Idea To Look At

Last week two stories seem to generate a lot of interest all across the blogs and in the news. The first was the rumor of a “Skype Killer” being planned by the leading telcos around the world. The second was the blockbuster move by the new WiMax consortium of players including Intel, ClearWire, Sprint plus the cable companies, along with online leader Google, to take over what Sprint and Clearwire were both not really doing yet, that to create a national WiMax footprint here in the USA which wi

Indian University Implements Wi – Fi Mesh to form the Country’s Largest Wi – Fi Network (Which is Still Quite Small!). More on Wireless Mesh Networking.

While this may not seem like great news to many of you â€" it did get me quite excited. I have always maintained that setting up a Wi Fi Mesh is not too difficult if the topography is not too varied and the Line of Sight is clear because equipment (with powerful dual radios) today is quite sophisticated and even antenna options (patch, sector, grid) are quite varied. We still did not have a full fledged Wi â€" Fi Mesh in India for quite a while!   Manipal University has implemented a Wi Fi Mes

VoIPWatch Named 25 Best BtoZ Blogs By The Standard

I was tipped off by a reader tonight about something special inside the Standard, the second coming of the Industry Standard. When I read this, my chin dropped. I was stunned. For the record, I don't profess to be a techie, just someone who can make sense out of technology so others can understand. That was why I started VoIPWatch in 2003 with the basic idea behind it being four main objectives. Those same four still hold true today. For long time readers, this is nothing new. I've said it he

Video streaming through a Nokia cellphone, Qik.com and a FlexClip…

Made myself a cameraphone mount using a simple FlexClip… I’m not sure what to make of the Nokia E51 I received from WOM World Nokia three weeks ago, so I’ve been using it as much as I can (kiasu?). Being a heavy Internet user, I don’t care so much about talking on the cellphone as much as its ability to connect to the net. In fact, I use more data service than voice, and my thousands of AT&T rollover minutes will attest to that. Heck, if only VoIP services were embraced by mobile phone com

Is Truphone the modern day Boo.com?

People tell me things about Truphone, the VOIP pioneer. I have no idea how accurate they are. Everything I’m being told is negative, though. What I do know is that Jeb Brilliant of Brilliant Expos is a regular user. But the moment they want to charge him, he’s clear that he’ll look elsewhere. I know a few other users… who ONLY use Truphone because it’s free. That can’t be a good position from which to grow, surely? The future â€" at least, viewed from SMS Text News Towers, doesn’t look too br

Anyone still believe the government can't examine each and every communication that happens on the Internet?

Hell, your ISP can examine each and every communication that happens on the Internet. And the Feds can just buy access to the data your ISP collects. In real time. In Procera's ideal world, your grandma in Poughkeepsie should pay less to use only e-mail and the Web than you do to access e-mail, the Web, P2P, VoIP, and online gaming. A "big dumb pipe" approach this is not. In fact, as Procera make clear in press materials, "Adding capacity is not the answer!" to ISP bandwidth problems. Thro

Internet Withdrawal

*whew!* Glad that’s over! The last 30 hours or so have been… notsomuch interesting. But did have time to get a few more chores done around the house and such like. A tornado and high winds thee counties north of America’s Third World County took a pretty big bite out of our cable provider’s infra. No TV (no big loss there), but also no internet service and no VOIP (until yesterday, our ONLY long distance service). Oh, we still had local phone service, but… our backup dialup internet service

Step by Step : What is the Internet all about

Speaking about the Internet, lets look at the very base of it. What is it all about? Is a virtual world necessary?  The Internet is a virtual space, another medium of communication. U can see & hear but you can’t smell or feel it. Its just like the real world, you can do amazing stuffs on it but virtually. You can hear the World and the World can hear you. You don’t have to go to every state or country to tell something but you can let everyone to find you somehow on the internet virtual s
